Beneficiary Spotlight - Scott Robertson Scott Robertson was medically discharged from the Royal Signals after a diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder from various tours of Afghanistan. In recovery and still relatively new to golf, Scott credits On Course Foundation with saving his life. This is his recovery story.

Why did you decide to join the military?: My Dad was in the Army and I wanted to serve my country.

Length of service: 13 years, 10 months

Why did you leave the military?: Medical dicharge

How did this injury/illness occur?: PTSD from tours of Afghanistan, more specifically HERRICK 18/19 in Patrol Base Durai, Helmand.

When and how did you hear about On Course Foundation?: Through a poster at a Personnel Recovery Centre in Colchester.

What was your golfing experience prior to joining On Course Foundation?: Limited, had played a handful of times before and had my own clubs.

Your experience of On Course Foundation so far – what do you take out of the events that you attend?: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, OCF have literally saved my life these past couple of years on a number of occasions. I’ve been in the darkest of places at times and if it wasn’t for the events that OCF provide, I wouldn’t be here today.

The camaraderie, inclusive environment, general squaddie banter and being outdoors playing a sport I love with like-minded people has been a massive help to me. The events are just a day or a couple of days to be away from the pressures of life and the darkness that surrounds mental health problems.

What do you hope to gain from On Course Foundation in the future?: OCF have already given me so much. My recovery pathway isn’t over yet though and I can honestly see OCF helping me for the rest of my life.

They’ve helped to pick me up and find a purpose again. I’ve met some fantastic beneficiaries and members of staff with the charity who I know I can come to with anything - whether it be just to have a chat about issues I’m having or to discuss employment and life opportunities. I’m still no closer to being able to work but I know that when the time comes that I’ll be able to call upon the charity to support me in doing this.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?: Serving my country with honour. Receiving the Queens Commendation for Valuable Service on Operations.

Off the golf course, what do you like to do in your spare time?: I like to go to spinning classes once or twice a week, walking, and volunteering at a local Cancer Research shop. I like to watch all sports on TV and also spend much of my time studying for a degree and studying the Bible or going to Church.

Who are your heroes? Sir Alex Ferguson, Colin Montgomerie, Tiger Woods (not for personality but Golfing ability and greatness), and Ally McCoist.

On Course Foundation continue to provide positive provision for wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans - supporting their recovery and transition to civilian life through confidence building golf events and opportunities for employment in the golf industry.

As a sport, golf offers a unique platform where players of all skills and backgrounds can compete healthily, improving not only their physical but mental strength too. With many lacking self- belief, it’s our aim to help our beneficiaries realise their potential and set them on a fulfilling path.

Formed in 2010, we have seen first-hand that that participation in golf can have a profound positive effect on the rehabilitation of our beneficiaries.
