ON COURSE TO THE OPEN - SUMMER 2022

What is On Course to the Open?

On Course to the Open is a veteran led challenge that involves a team made up of OCF beneficiaries carrying a golf pin flag from Royal St George’s Golf Club in Kent, the venue of the 149th Open Championship, to the Old Course at St Andrews in Fife, Scotland, venue of the 150th Open Championship.

The route will take in all mainland UK golf clubs to have hosted the Open Championship since its inception in 1860. The team will also visit other clubs along the way, with the distance covered being approximately 1500km. This will be done in the form of a relay using non-motorised means - walking, running, cycling, rowing, and swimming. The challenge will take around two weeks to complete.

All participants will also have or have had a medical condition of some kind, be that a physical injury, non-physical injury, or medical condition/illness. For all, golf has played a major part in their recovery and well-being.

Why is it happening in 2022?

The 150th Open Championship takes place in 2022 at the home of golf, St Andrews. This is a huge occasion in the world of golf and represents a unique opportunity to mark the occasion in a special way.

Why are beneficiaries doing this?

The aims of the challenge are threefold:

- To raise awareness of the Foundation and the work done to support beneficiaries through the game of golf.
To raise funds for On Course Foundation to help them with the important work that they do. Beneficiaries working to fundraise to support the next cohort of veterans.
- To showcase the health benefits of golf and how it can help people in other aspects of life. Showing them that through long-term participation in the game they can enjoy a sport, play with friends and compete again after injury or illness.

How can I and/or my golf club help?

There are various ways you or your golf club can support the challenge, including:

Promoting the fundraising element of the challenge to golf club members.
Carrying out some fundraising activity to support the challenge.
Donating a fourball voucher to be auctioned in support of the challenge.

All of the above can be done any time before, during or after the challenge - whatever will work best for the club. Every contribution is valuable and welcomed and further options of how a club or individual can support can be found here.
