Working with Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre
A publication released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD); Annual Medical Discharges in the UK Regular Armed Forces (July 2019) states that in the period from April 2014 - March 2019, over 2,100 Naval Service personnel were medically discharged. The numbers from the tri-Services stretches into the tens of thousands demonstrating the need for positive provision for these vulnerable individuals.
In both May and October, On Course Foundation (OCF) delivered two Introductory Golf Events in conjunction with Hasler Naval Service Recovery Centre (NSRC). The event was delivered for wounded, injured and sick (WIS) Naval Service personnel at China Fleet Country Club in Saltash, Cornwall.

Both events were generously supported by the Veterans Foundation with attendees introduced to golf, receiving comprehensive tuition and also learning about the opportunities available within OCF, including information regarding our employment programme. These events were delivered in a relaxed setting with like-minded individuals who are in a similar stage of recovery.
''Thank you for organising such a wonderful day. It was a brand new experience for me but I really enjoyed the tuition, meeting new people and being outdoors. I can't wait to have the opportunity to be involved with On Course Foundation in the near future and look forward to receiving the event applications.''

Mark Schorah, our Head of Employment and Events, delivered the event in October. As a former veteran himself, Mark is well aware of the challenges that these individuals face in transitioning to the civilian world and re-integrating to society:
''Transition from a military career to civilian life, particularly after a long career, can be difficult for many people. Couple that with having to cope with an injury or medical condition that is cutting a career short and the difficulty multiplies significantly. Many such Service leavers struggle with confidence as a result and inflict pressures on themselves. Our events aim to help them cope with these difficulties with a focus on what they can do, not what they can't do.''
We also deliver similar events in partnership with the MoD led Defence Recovery Capability Programme at the nationwide Personnel Recovery Centres at Edinburgh, Phoenix House (Catterick), Chavasse House (Colchester) and the Battleback Centre in Lilleshall.
PGA coach David Llewellyn (pictured above) have been involved with OCF since the very start, introducing hundreds of wounded, injured and sick Service personnel and veterans with varying degrees of injury, illness and mental health related issues. He often describes his 'privilege' at being able to give them something to assist with their on-going recovery:
Having been involved with the Foundation since the beginning I have seen how quickly it has grown. It has become a well-known vehicle to help injured and sick soldiers to start or improve their golf game. The number of events seems to increase year-on-year, as do the number of beneficiaries and it's great to work together with Recovery Centres like Hasler, introducing these inspirational individuals to this great game and Foundation.''
We look forward to continuing our relationship with Hasler NSRC and the nationwide Personnel Recovery Centres in 2020 and beyond.

About the Veterans Foundation
Many armed forces charities struggle to raise sufficient funding to support serving and former members of the British Armed Forces and sometimes their dependants who are in need. The Veterand Foundation has been created to extablish a new and nationwide source of funding to help these charities. It acquires its funding through the Veterans Lottery and donations.
